Many people use this type of motor exclusively for smaller batches.

Continuous – This three way motor mixes continuously without having to switch speeds…everything mixes at one speed throughout the entire recipe process. This is the most popular motor type, and it’s the one you’ll want to get if you’re going to use your mixer often.

This is the best of both worlds for those in love with classic mixing bowls, and it’s a nice option for those who have a little experience mixing.

As you can see, if you love the classic look but want a modern KitchenAid mixer, there’s an option for you! Classic KitchenAid mixers are great if you’re looking for something a little more basic. They aren’t quite as nice as the newer ones, and they certainly don’t have all of the fancy bells and whistles that artisan models do. Artisan KitchenAid mixers are a fairly recent addition to the KitchenAid family, first hitting the market in 2005. They’re all about functionality, offering technology with a sleek look that’ll dazzle your guests. And since they’re all about function, most of them have a few extra features that your classic stand mixer just can’t compete with. Things like:

Pulse – Pulse is one of my favorite features! It lets you switch speeds on your mixer with just the push of a button, meaning that there’s no need for multiple motors and/or switches as there are with classic models. This also means that your typical recipe will never include the need for speed changes. This is perfect for those with limited mixing experience, and it’s also a nice option for those who are trying to keep things simple.

EZ Bake – This is one of my favorite features of artisan KitchenAid mixers! When you choose this option, your mixer will automatically stop mixing as soon as you place your ingredients in the bowl. (Think of it as a safety feature. If you don’t start mixing immediately, your bowl is likely to get too hot and burn the ingredients!) This means that while you’re mixing, you can place your ingredients in the bowl and go about your business. And remember – as soon as you start mixing again, the mixer will stop right back where it left off.

Mixing Options – This is a recent feature of artisan mixers introduced in 2016. It lets you choose the specific design of your bowl through a selection of colors. Pastel colors are all about subtlety, offering a little bit of color without taking over the whole space.

The classic line was first introduced in 1919, and were sold well into the ’80s. They were built on a traditional design – with a straight stand, wooden handles and retro looking attachments.  This style was retired in the ’90s when KitchenAid decided to start selling their newer models. Their new artisan line has replaced the classic as KitchenAid’s best-selling mixer, and it’s easy to see why. The artisan series is based off of a more modern design – they have sleek chrome stands, rubberized handles and an overall sleeker look than their older counterparts.
