When baking, there are a few different methods that you can choose from depending on what kind of cake or cupcakes you are trying to make. One of the most common methods is called hand-held mixing. This means that instead of using a table mixer, it’s just the two of you in your kitchen with a paddle and whisk.
The best part about hand-held mixing is that it is considered by many to be an easier method than using a table mixer because without one, there’s not as much technical skill needed. All you need to do is put all the ingredients in a bowl and mix them up, with a minimal amount of technical skills required.
I decided to give hand held mixing a try to compare my results with the results that I get when using the separate bowl method. Overall, I’d say that hand held mixing gets much better results in my experience, but sometimes I think that hand-held mix has some drawbacks. Let me explain:
It takes time for the ingredients to mix by themselves when you’re just doing it by hand. You have to stir and whisk for awhile before it’s fully mixed. This can slow down your pace of getting through all the ingredients.
If the ingredients are starting to get a bit too light in color, it can be hard to tell when that is happening because it’s not very obvious when you’re just mixing by hand.
There is more of a possibility for making an unevenly shaped cake with just your hands as opposed to using a table mixer. With the table mixer, it’s much harder to make an uneven cake with no way of knowing if you’ve pressed down on the batter too hard when you’re stirring by hand.
With just your hand and a whisk, you have to be careful about how much you’re mixing since you don’t have a mixer to help with that. If the batter is too sticky, you could easily get it everywhere and make a mess.
When I’m making cupcakes, I like to use the table mixer method because I feel like it gives me more control over how my cupcakes turn out. But sometimes when I’m making larger cakes or other desserts, it’s hard to do with just my hands and a whisk. There’s just not enough power behind each mix that makes it easier for me to mix things together.
So in closing, I must say that there really is not a right or wrong way to mix things when you’re using your hands and a whisk. All that matters is what works best and what you like doing most! I’m just happy that I’ve been able to find a nice balance between hand-held mixing and using the table mixer, which has worked out very well for me.
What do you think about using hand held mixing? Do you use it even though you have a table mixer? Or is the table mixer method your preferred way of doing things?

The hand held mixer is commonly used for mixing and blending tasks, such as cake batter, frosting and sauces. The main parts of a hand held mixer are the head assembly that holds the beaters, control knobs to turn on and off the power supply, switch to turn on and off speed control, power cord, storage stand and a dough hook that mixes & blends ingredients. It consists of two or three attachments. The two attachments are mainly used in mixing tasks while the third attachment usually is an accessory that helps you scrape down bowl interiors with ease; this is applicable if you were making something like cake batter or other wet mixes.
The hand held mixer comes in different sizes and models. Large ones are known to be the market leaders and they tend to have a higher price tag as a result. You can get one that is quite heavy if you want, but it will also make it harder for you to move around. Smaller models are more portable and popular than large ones, but still perform well.
Some of the most common uses for hand held mixers include making cake batters, icing cakes and frosting cakes, making bread doughs, whipping cream and whipping up sauces.
What is the range of speed in a table mixer?
The range of speed the hand held mixer has depends on the model, but you can find models that have a wide range of speeds from 500 to 3000 rpm. Usually, the higher the speed, the stronger the motor will tend to be.
How big of a mixer do I need?
The general rule is, if you are making a large batch of pancake mix or cake batter, then you will need a large mixer with a powerful motor. However, if you are making small amounts of food without too many ingredients for the machine to handle at the same time, then you can get away with a smaller model.
One thing to consider when looking for the best hand held mixer is the price.
You can start with what type of food you plan on mixing and measuring then figuring out the size based off that. You probably won’t need a 9-cup model as much as someone who wants to stir up some shortening and flour for pancakes or cakes.
