When a house has a wood stove in it and there are no windows on the back wall, think about putting insulation up right behind it. The heat will cause combustion because wood isn’t a 100% efficient. The heat will cause combustion even if the house also has a fireplace. So next, think about hanging curtains on the windows and then putting insulating material behind that. Finally, put some kind of a stove pipe extending from the top of your chimney out of your house. The trick is to get air up into the chimney when you have no windows, so try to always have cold air coming down from your attic, which gets warmer because it’s close to the ground and lots of windows.

I have to cook in a house that doesn’t have any windows on the back wall and I have to cook in the Midwest because of our winters. What I did do was get an exhaust fan directly behind the stove, and it works well except that it gets very hot when I’m cooking. I’ve seen some people put a fan aimed at some sort of air stream, like out of an air conditioning unit or something, though they usually point it up where they want cooling air and down where they want heating air – just an open vent inside the stove area. I would say that one of the easiest things to do is cover your windows on the back wall with curtains and insulate behind them. I usually put two layers on all my walls.
If you’re fixing a wood stove in a windy area, you can get some kind of exhaust fan for under $100 for about $60 and install it yourself. However, don’t use one which points down because that will just cause air from the back of the stove to swirl around inside and maintain combustion instead of allowing heat to diffuse sideways out through the chimney flue. Better yet, get one that points sideways or up. However, if you’re going to need a chimney extension, I’d suggest that you use a pipe and not just some kind of pipe cap.
Remember how I said that the coolest air was found in front of the stove? Well, it’s not exactly true. It is true when you are cooking with a gas stove or hot plate at temperatures above 50º F. If your stove has an exhaust fan, it works great for getting the hot air up to an area out of the way where there will be no combustion and thus no heat radiated back through your chimney flue. You can also use a box fan but be careful that you don’t open it up and let it blow out the window.
Even though you have insulation behind your stove and in front of your windows and doors, if your stove heat is too hot, you can always install an exhaust fan in the bathroom to blow out of the back room. When there is no space inside the house to install such a fan, I simply open up a window for ventilation.
I also use an exhaust fan on my gas fired range instead of ventilation. I’ve done this for years because I live in a northern climate where we have terrible winter weather and this has kept my range from being too hot to use. I simply cut a hole in the wall over my range, install an exhaust fan and attach the duct work to it. I turn it on whenever I use my range.
If you already have a wood stove and are trying to solve this problem, it’s going to take more than just an exhaust fan. The kind of wood stove that I use doesn’t have any insulation inside, so I’ve had to buy insulation panels that fit inside and then place them against the back wall from floor to ceiling. It works great. The same is true for a fireplace if you’re not also wanting ventilation for your house during the wintertime.

If you live in an area with high levels of arsenic in your soil, you might want to call a specialist who can figure out how much arsenic there is and then come up with a method of removing it. Suppose that you have some kind of brownish tiles on the wall. Those tiles may be soldered with lead. You simply need to repaint the entire wall in a different color, even if it’s just white. Cast iron doesn’t contain any arsenic compounds or lead carbonates or leaded solder or red iron oxide or paint products. Another good thing is to use granite counter tops instead of other types because most other materials are painted with white lead which gets into the air when used for heating purposes like stoves and ranges.
